Celebrations: Ingenuity goes long way in finding perfect Orthodox wedding gown

When Talya (nee Strauss) Ilovitz got engaged, her hunt for a dress for her Orthodox wedding felt endless. She never imagined her best option would be a sleeveless white cocktail dress a few sizes too big at a local boutique in her native San Diego.

But after searching widely, every other possibility was either too expensive or

didn’t have sleeves. “I liked this dress more than anything else I could find,” she recalls. So, together with the help of a seamstress, dedicated friends and her sister, artist Avra Strauss, her crack team gave the dress a makeover from top to bottom.

“We cut the arms off a blazer to make sleeves and changed the very straight sheath shape to a mermaid shape that flared out. Then we added four layers of tulle to create a much fuller skirt,” says Strauss. “I also cut fabric into the shape of a few hundred leaves and we attached them with beads to the bottom of the dress. I liked that it was a little bit unusual, with a different texture and shape, and had a feeling of movement.”

The unique gown was covered with three-dimensional, raw-edge leaves that suited her personality. The result? A one-of-a-kind creation, reminiscent of a tree in bloom, evoking the bride’s love of the outdoors.

The stunning long-sleeve gown put an unconventional spin on a look appropriate for an Orthodox ceremony.

As more brides opt for inventive solutions to classic wedding-dress dilemmas, retailers are following suit. Vera Wang and Monique Lhuillier are among the household names of designers now producing bridal gowns in unconventional colors to match their ethereal, dream-like styles, employing shades of blush, nude and even black. In fact, Wang’s upcoming fall 2012 bridal collection relies on colors primarily reserved for underwear rather than outerwear. But these are far from the only unconventional options for contemporary brides.

Transforming undergarments into outerwear has long been a traditional method of creating untraditional attire. In fact, vintage trusseau “dressing gowns,” and other slip dresses once worn only at home, are frequently sold on Etsy.com and other sites as potential wedding dresses for unconventional brides. The site is a great resource for unusual treasures, including an eggshell-and-champagne-colored 1930s boudoir gown with matching peignoir jacket found on a recent search. Silk nightgowns and other unusual pieces that traverse unconventional territory can be easily identified by searching with the keywords “unconventional” or “experimental” to discover wedding dresses with unusual details such as raw edges in silk chiffon or georgette.

Vintage pieces, unusual colors and Ilovitz’s DIY option are among the appeal of the unconventional wedding dress. For some, as the character Carrie Bradshaw illustrated in the feature film “Sex and the City 2,” brides of all ages might prefer a vintage suit. The look not only expressed Bradshaw’s on-screen personality, but the option also, in theory, presents the opportunity of a repeat appearance at other events.

According to Jewish law, there is no halachic requirement to wear white under the chuppah, although it is considered a ritual convention suggesting a spiritual purity. Among Orthodox couples, the groom, too, wears white in the form of a kittel, or ritual robe-like garment placed over a suit. The kittel is reserved for life’s most poignant moments: one’s wedding, Yom Kippur, Passover seders and, ultimately, burial.

For women, the Mishnah (Ta’anit 4:8) discusses the tradition of wearing white dresses as a symbol of spiritual purity. Rabbi Shimon ben Gamliel said, “There were no greater holidays (yamim tovim) for Israel than Tu B’Av and Yom Kippur, for on them the girls of Jerusalem used to go out in borrowed white dresses … and dance in the vineyards. What would they say? ‘Young man, lift up your eyes and see what you choose for yourself …’ ”

These days, Tu B’Av, the 15th of the month of Av, which falls this year on Aug. 2, is commemorated as a Jewish day of love, and is a popular time for weddings.

Like all fashions, bridal attire takes cues from celebrities. When today’s brides say “I don’t” to a conventional gown, their choices may take the form of a two-tone dress. One of the most widely noted examples was Gwen Stefani, who donned a white Galliano dress that dramatically transitioned to a bright coral pink as it reached the floor. Another infamous example of a trend-bucking bride was Vogue contributing editor Lauren Santo Domingo, who cut off her one-of-a-kind Nina Ricci mid-reception.

Some brides opt for more subtle twists, such as adding floral appliques or a contrasting sash, as Vera Wang has done with a vivid black sash against clouds of white skirt for her spring 2012 collection. The look is one of the most anticipated trends for spring 2013, along with her debut of deeper blushing tones for gowns ranging from shocking fire-engine red, to maroon, burgundy and deep wine.

Some brides wearing color flip tradition by dressing their bridesmaids in white, with a colored sash on A-line or empire waists to match the bride’s colored gown.

The operative concern when it comes to an unconventional dress is, will it evoke regret years later when brides look back on their choices? Despite her on-screen “Sex and the City” white bridal attire, when actress Sarah Jessica Parker married Matthew Broderick in 1997, she chose a black dress. In a subsequent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she admitted if she could do it all over again, she would definitely opt for a beautiful white gown.

As Ilovitz’s experience suggests, with thoughtful attention, even the most personalized white can be far from conventional.

Obama’s reelection campaign has some fashionable fundraisers

Runway to Win, a fashion line that promotes and raises money for President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign, boasts top designers such as Vera Wang and Marc Jacobs, but many who volunteered for a similar effort four years ago are sitting out this year.

Names you won’t find in the 2012 campaign’s 22-piece collection: Maria Cornejo, Zac Posen, Nanette Lepore, Juicy Couture, all of whom designed T-shirts for 2008’s Runway to Change; Isaac Mizrahi, who contributed a tote bag; and Tina Lutz and Marcia Patmos, who made a cardigan.

Why the absence? The designers didn’t respond to requests for comment, but the answer may lie in what Donna Karan, another Runway to Change volunteer remaining on the sidelines in 2012, told POLITICO last year about red-carpet scrutiny: “I think too much is discussed about what we wear, rather than who we are.”

“I love dressing Michelle,” she continued, referring to the first lady. “But I look at her as a woman [who is] about women and celebrating women, and maybe I’m not geared into exactly what she’s wearing. I think there’s too much red-carpet talk and we need more talk about who she is.”

Other Obama backers whose designs are worn regularly by the first lady — but who aren’t contributing to Runway to Win — include Reed Krakoff, whose bag the first lady was spotted toting last year (and whose $990 bird print top Ann Romney wore on “CBS This Morning” on May 1); Doo-Ri Chung, whose purple, one-shoulder gown Michelle Obama wore to the state dinner with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and first lady Kim Yoon-ok last year; Isabel Toledo, who designed the first lady’s dress and matching overcoat for the 2009 Inauguration; and Chris Benz, who designed the 2012 campaign outfit for Mattel’s Barbie doll.

Meanwhile, designer Thakoon Panichgul, who designed a $95 silk scarf for Runway to Win, is mum on what else — if anything — is on his drawing board. Panichgul, who designed the dress Michelle Obama wore the night her husband accepted the 2008 Democratic nomination for president, declined to comment to POLITICO on whether he’s working on anything for the first lady’s 2012 campaign wardrobe.

Although many Runway to Change designers chose not to contribute pieces to Runway to Win, a number did break out their sewing machines a second time for the president. In addition to Wang and Jacobs, returning Runway participants include Tory Burch, Jason Wu and Diane von Furstenberg. Vogue editor Anna Wintour — who has contributed the maximum $2,500 to Obama’s primary campaign and is a prominent Obama bundler, having raised at least $500,000 for his reelection effort, according to the Center for Responsive Politics — co-hosted a February fundraiser with actress Scarlett Johansson to launch the Runway to Win collection.

And while Michael Kors didn’t contribute to the Runway collection, he continues to make the rounds at Obama fundraisers and has donated $2,500 to Obama’s reelection effort, as have Burch, Toledo and Tommy Hilfiger.

U.S. Senatorial candidate Jeb Bush III Stole Milk Money in Kindergarten

by Jedidiah Horowitz, Jr.

ORLANDO, Fl. — Jeb Bush III entered kindergarten in 2019 to begin his education at the prestigious Snobby Evil Rich Kids Only Private School. Arriving on the handsome campus, studded with gold-leaf-encrusted buildings and diamond-decorated shrubs, he spotted something he thought did not belong at a school where the boys wore ties and carried smart phones while firing people in their fathers’ employ. Jessica Smith, a chubby five-year-old with a knockoff Vera Wang lunchbox in one hand and her milk money in the other, skipped joyfully to the classroom, unaware of the malicious intent of the young Republican candidate-in-training….

Presidential Candidate Jeannette Boehner Tripped Toddler in Play Group

by Roberta Woodward

CLEVELAND, Oh – Jeanette Boehner entered a toddler play group in 2024 eager to interact with fellow residents of the Ultra Rich Exclusive Gated Community Enclave where servants were as plentiful as dandelions in spring and parents refused to allow their children to use plebian laptops instead of exclusive Macs. But she spotted someone who didn’t seem to belong—a dark-haired, dark-complected child who frowned as the young Jeanette came through the door. The plot was hatched, say anonymous friends who have been haunted by the incident ever since, when young Jeannette saw the other girl take two cookies instead of one from the gilt-edged tray offered by the immigrant maid….

Bridal traditions: Out with the old and in with the new

Sydney Dao / Fashion columnist

Usually when one mentions the word wedding, you think of “tradition.” But today’s brides are throwing out old traditions and breaking all the rules.

Traditionally, color options for wedding gowns are nonexistent unless you are selecting among white, antique white or ivory. But this season, brides will be in full bloom and full of color. Vera Wang showed a full bridal collection in shades of crimson for spring 2013. Red was also spotted at Oscar de la Renta and Romona Keveza. If red is too bold, Monique Lhuillier offered a soft dusty pink gown in Chantilly lace. Tinted gowns are not for every bride, and for those who are a little more reserved, a pair of bright colored shoes is a great way to step out of tradition and bend the rules bit.

Another big trend is non-matching bridesmaid dresses. Bridesmaids are given great liberty by the bride to choose their own dresses as long as they stay within a color story. The upside is the bridesmaids get to select styles that are most flattering for their bodies. The downside is there are many shades to a color, and different fabrications make cohesion even more challenging. The end results are usually a mismatch group of girls. If you are a bride breaking this tradition, I suggest making all the bridesmaids wear the same fabric. Local designers like Chloe Dao who offer different silhouettes in your choice of color and fabrication are great options. Your bridesmaids will look like a wedding party and not guests of the wedding, especially in photos.

My favorite change in wedding tradition is the attire for mother of the brides and grooms. These lovely ladies are no longer confined to wearing shapeless, matronly dresses with matching boleros. New MOBs and MOGs are young, stylish and modern; they no longer sit in the shadows of the brides. My own mother, of eight daughters, has been through six weddings as mother-of-the-bride. With each wedding, she showed a little more of her figure and more of her personal style. Our mothers should be celebrated as this is their special day as well.

Some traditions should be preserved, but I am happy to see these traditions go. This gives not only the bride, but the entire wedding party, more freedom to express themselves.

Oscars, Planting and Culture Take Unique Visitors to Mag Sites

February Web traffic flows typically show declines month-to-month because of fewer days to count (even with the 2012 leap year). Not at VanityFair.com (+50.55% page views, -10.68% unique visitors versus January 2012), which again capitalized online from it huge brand investment in the Academy Awards dinner and afterparty. Images from the party itself drew 4.4 million views into the slideshow, while party gossip and other Oscars-related material pulled in 9 million PVs overall.

On the other hand not a tux or Vera Wang ordinarily is to be found in the nation’s gardens where planning for the coming planting season helped Rodale’s OrganicGardening.com (+55.47% PVs, +78.42% UVs) till new audience pastures. This is the kind of determined, task-specific traffic that lingers. As good as the raw numbers get, site managers say that they closely follow the ways in which users access and search it.

Illustrated by Kyle Hilton

At NYMag.com (-3.49% page views, -19.80% unique visitors) the popular culture and entertainment guide didn’t actually lose nearly 20% of its audience in February. It sent that audience elsewhere to the newly spun-off Vulture.com. Until now the pop-culture blog has been a section within NYmag, but by launching it as a standalone site under its own URL, NYMag is able to segment more entertainment advertisers off for the property and still leverage the audience for its own cross-site sales. The site has had some great viral hits in recent months, including the Downton Abbey cut-out dolls feature in January that helped the section hit 4 million users.

Below is a sample chart of traffic from the three magazine urls mentioned above. See our complete list of 135 consumer sites in min’s April 30 issue (out later today). Also featured in our issue, is site traffic for major b2b magazine sites for the month of February compared to January, featuring Lawnsite and WWD.
